Each year, pro bono attorneys, law students and legal professionals provide over 4, 000 hours of direct legal services to HIV+ clients on a wide range of issues, coordinated through the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Barristers AIDS Legal Services Project. In return, volunteers receive challenging and rewarding legal experiences and the unending gratitude of their clients: "He made the whole experience great...Amazing, couldn't have asked for a better professional...I will forever be grateful…I cannot say thank you enough...He gave me more hope than anyone who has worked on this...From the beginning to the end I was very pleased...I'm grateful to HALSA and to a wonderful attorney" are just a few of our clients' responses to the work of pro bono attorneys this past year.
HALSA needs pro bono attorneys to accept referrals
and provide one-on-one representation in all
areas of law listed above. Representation can
include counsel and advice, brief service, or
litigation, depending on the attorney's expertise
and interest. Our most active pro bono panels
are in the areas of immigration and simple estate
planning. Attorney schedules are always accommodated.

Internship/Externship opportunities are available year-round to work with HALSA staff attorneys, including a full-time internship program in the summer. Students interview clients, provide legal education and do extensive legal research and writing.
Spanish speaking and previous experience working with diverse communities is highly desirable. If interested, please send a detailed cover letter and resume using the contact information listed below. There is no deadline to apply; however availability is sometimes limited.
HALSA staff attorneys frequently need the help of trained legal professionals, especially in the areas of legal research and litigation support. Generally, the work can be done from your own home or office. Click here for volunteer form.
MCLE training sessions on HIV specific topics are periodically held at the downtown offices of the Los Angeles County Bar. In addition, written materials and mentoring are available for most subject areas.
